Published in the June 19, 2000 edition of the Smurfy News, by Peter Caparelli We sometimes get questions asking about the proper preservation and display of Smurf figurines. With many pieces now commanding hundreds of dollars, it's worth it to spend a little time and money protecting the value of your collection! Three culprits to monitor are sunlight, humidity, and temperature. Direct sunlight dries out materials and produces ultraviolet rays that discolor them. Never store your collectibles in direct sunlight. Incandescent light (the average light bulbs) is preferred over fluorescent lighting, but don't put objects close enough to the light source for the heat to effect them. Humidity is the level of moisture in the air. Damp environments promote the growth of mold, fungus and mildew which can permanently stain PVC. The preferred relative humidity in a storage area should be between 45 and 55 percent. Readings of more than 65% are considered in the danger zone. It should be noted that too dry an environment, especially combined with high temperature, can dry out materials, causing discoloration, color changes, cracking and flaking of paint. Extreme temperatures, regardless of humidity, should always be avoided. Items should never be stored near radiators, fireplaces, heating vents, etc. Do not store valuable items in the garage or attic where they can experience extremes. Basements can be used if they are relatively dry. When you display your collection, some thought should go towards controlling these factors. We use acrylic display cases with sliding doors. We also store some pieces under glass. A "microclimate" is maintained inside the case that protects your collection from extremes in temperature and humidity. It should be mounted away from direct sunlight. A hinged cover or sliding door allows easy access to your collection, yet it keeps out dust and protects your Smurfs from accidents. |
