Confusing Figurines
Many of the collectible Smurf PVC figurines look alike. Others might be confused because of similar names, and many go by more than one common name. We generally use the English names adopted by the Smurf Collectors Club International. Because some Smurfs can be worth quite a bit more than others, you should always use Schleich numbers when trading. Here are some of the confusing figurines:
  | 20011 LAUGHING & 20079 JOLLY - These two are both laughing, but they are doing different things with their hands and arms. |
| 20015 EARACHE & 20077 NAUGHTY - These look similar at first glance, but are also doing different things...Earache (also known as "Can't Hear" to some) is sticking his fingers in his ears like they hurt, but Naughty is doing it as he makes a face! | |
  | 20228 FITNESS and 20417 BODY BUILDER - Someone offered me a "Bodybuilder in red shorts" which turned out to be 20228 Fitness. 20417 Bodybuilder was originally issued in red shorts as #20228. Peyo did not like it and pulled it. It was replaced by todays 20228 Fitness, which is also wearing red shorts. 20417 was rereleased after Peyo's death wearing gold shorts. If someone offers you Bodybuilder in red shorts, make sure you know which one you are taking about! Bodybuilder in red shorts is worth considerably more than Fitness! |
| 20023 ROCK 'N ROLL, 20449 LEAD GUITAR PLAYER & 20450 BASS GUITAR PLAYER - Here are three guitar Smurfs...one an early mold and 2 from the newer style. | |
  | 20026 SITTING & 20027 THINKER - This two are easy to mix-up...both are in essentially the same pose, but Thinker has his head resting in his hand. |
| 20085 CUSHION & 20423 SITTER - Here are two more Smurfs that are sitting and might be mixed up with Sitting and Thinker if you only describe a Smurf as "sitting." | |
   | 20032, 20548 and 20549 ICE HOCKEY - 20032 has a yellow helmet. In 1999 Party Pigs (Schleich's North American distributor at the time) released Ice Hockey color variations, but designated them 20548 and 20549. These are Party Pigs #'s, not Schleich's. |
| 20033 CLOWN & 20090 JESTER - These don't look alike, but if you are relying on common names only, you could mix them up. | |
  | 20035 SOCCER & 20416 NEW FOOTBALL - Soccer is most commonly found with a red top and yellow shorts. There are many harder-to-find color variations, all considered 20035. 20416 has a yellow top, red shorts and a checkered ball. He is not a color variation as he was assigned his own Schleich #. |
| 20039 MALLET, 20083 HAMMER & 20096 SLEDGEHAMMER - More Smurfs which are easily confused if Schleich numbers are not used. | |
  | 20045 ARTIST & 20089 PAINTER - These are very similar in appearance, but Painter in considerably harder to find. |
| 20069 JUNGLE & 20230 WILD - Although the figures look nothing alike, the same names are often used to describe both. | |
  | 20046 EMPEROR & 20074 KING - Don't use Schleich #'s, and you'll find these two are confused a lot too...Emperor is accented with metallic gold. |
| 20047 TRUMPETER & 20072 TRUMPET PLAYER - Here's another pair that are often confused, and Trumpet Playet is considerably harder to find. Trumpet player has his eyes open, and is standing, not walking. | |
  | 20048 FLAUTIST & 20095 OBOIST - Flautist is wearing a red shirt and has his eyes closed, he is more common than oboist. |
| 20049 TENNIS STAR & 20093 TENNIS PLAYER - Are you getting the point? Always use Schleich #'s! | |
  | 20065 RUGBY & 20150 AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL - I always mix these up and have to look them up to see which is which! |
| 20119 SMURFERMAN & 20127 SUPERMAN - Some people call 119 Superman and 127 Smurferman...use Schleich #'s! | |
   | 20153 SANTA SMURFETTE, 20200 CHRISTMAS SMURFETTE & 20208 CHRISTMAS SMURFETTE - These three are often confused because two are described an Smurfette in a red coat with gift (but long or short coat?) and two of them share the same name "Christmas Smurfette." |
| 20216 TUXEDO & 20413 BRIDEGROOM - There are two Smurfs wearing a tuxado! | |
We are really just touching on the tip of the iceberg here...there are many, many more figures that are easily confused...there are more than one Baby, Papa, Gargamel, Smurfette and others and so you should always describe what they are doing (or better yet use Schleich #'s!) There is also lots of Christmas Smurfs, a couple of football, two talking on phones (one cell phone, one old fashioned), etc., etc. By now I think you get our point! Schleich #'s are the most widely recognized unique identifier when talking Smurf PVC's...any collector worth his or her salt knows and uses them!
