We recently received the following email: To whom it may concern, my husband and I grew up with the smurfs. Even though we are adults now, we would still like to see the smurfs. Please put the put the show back on television. Now if we could do that, don't you think we would have by now?!? Of course it's Cartoon Network that we are all counting on…and it looks like they came through! We have gotten several reports that commercials for their vintage cartoon spin-off "Boomerang" feature our little blue friends! The Boomerang web site (http://www.cartoonnetwork.com/boomerang/index.html) does not specifically mention them, but their trivia question last week was "Why is Gargamel always trying to catch the Smurfs?" (The answer? To turn them into gold!) It looks pretty safe to assume that the Smurfs will be featured on the new channel. If you receive DirecTV (sattelite), tune in from May 25 through June 30 for a free preview of Boomerang! Boomerang will be available on DirecTV for the free preview, and by subscription beginning July 1, 2000. Be sure to tune in and let us know what you discover! If you receive DISH Network (satellite) Boomerang is currently offered in the "America's Top 150" package, so if you subscribe to this package, you can tune in today! Otherwise, you can contact DISH Network at 800-333-3474 to subscribe. If you use cable TV, visit http://www.cablesource.net/getboomerang/Index.asp. At that site, you can determine if your provider offers Boomerang. (Time Warner Cable in NYC does not!) If they don't, the site will provide you with their phone number so you can call and request it, or you can get a letter that you can copy into your favorite word processor, or print using your browser, and send. The letter is pre-formatted and contains your provider's address. You can also fax this letter to your provider, the site will provide the number! Remember, the more people who request Boomerang the more likely a provider will be to add it. So, tell all your cartoon loving friends! NEW 2000 SMURFS FEEDBACK Well, all the new 2000 Smurf items have arrived and all pending orders have shipped! We have gotten nothing but great feedback about the new 2000 Smurf stuff! Our friend Delbert in Arkansas tells us he thinks the quality of the paint job is better this year than ever! Another Smurfer told us she was a little disappointed when she first learned some themes were repeated from earlier issues (fireman, diver, chimney sweep) but was absolutely thrilled when they arrived. "They're nothing like the old versions!" She noted, as we've all noticed, that the newer figures are getting heavier, bigger and she said she likes this new style better. How about you? SMURFY TRIVIA Smurfs popped up again on America's prime time trivia game shows. On May 13th's episode of "Twenty-one" the Smurfs were the subject of a question I'm sure we'd all get right: Which of the following is not a Smurf? a) Brainy Smurf b) Cheery Smurf c) Jokey Smurf d) Lazy Smurf On "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" Regis asked the question "how many of the dwarves names end in Y?" and the contestant said "man, I keep thinking of Smurfs" and then Regis started shouting "No Smurfs! We don't want Smurfs here! NO SMURFS!" The Smurfs also popped up on Millionaire several months ago when one of the low level questions asked "What color are Smurfs?"
