I am originally from Akron, Ohio. Yes, I am a "Schleich" and my wife collects Schleich pigs. I am a very distant relative of the manufacturers of Schleich Smurfs. I should have started collecting Smurfs years ago! -Bill Schleich (St. Petersburg, Florida) ----- "I have the best memories of Smurf cartoons, comics and candy when I was a child. I used to have a few figurines too! The thing I miss the most is the Stroumph licorice flavored candies. -Tina (Canada)" ----- "Hi MushroomVillage! Your smurf catalogue is great, and I have printed off all 176 pages, to enable me to record the smurfs I have. While doing that however, I have found a considerable number for which there isn't an entry in your catalogue. For example; 20021 Sleepwalker (yellow) with markings of Hong Kong, and another with markings of W Germany with a paint dot ; 20031 Postman(heart) Germany with orange paint dot; 20094 Bookworm W Berrie Hong Kong; 20147 Cow Girl one as in picture another with lasso handle considerably longer....and quite a few more. Why is this so? -Edward (Didn't say where he's from...)" PETE REPLIES: The MushroomVillage.com ID Guide is by no means complete! It only shows figurines we have offered for sale at one point or another. We do show the complete basic set, and hundreds of color, mold and marking variations, but no resource or guide shows every variation. As I mentioned above, we just completed documenting the Smurf figurines in our collection. We spent over a year going through our Smurf figurines and documented 1,539 Smurf variations in the range of 381 licensed Smurfs Shleich has released. We considered color, mold, and marking differences to be variations. We did not consider them variations if the paint was matte vs. glossy, if the color difference would have been too subtle to pick up in a photograph (light yellow vs. dark yellow), or if the markings were in varying locations, such as on an arm vs. a leg. We also paid no attention to the mold # (usually 1-4, and used by factory employees to determine which mold went bad if defective figurines start turning out). We also did not count supers, promos, raws, muster marks, errors, keychains, or paint samples. I have marking variations on several promos of the same type, so not all of a particular promo will bear the same mark. In theory, every Smurf might also be found as a raw, or even with a muster mark. Also, Schleich would provide any current production Smurf as a keychain, they'd just screw it in their head. What constitutes a variation varies from collector to collector, but no matter how you add it up, there are at least several thousand variations and no one, not even the most obsessive collector has every Smurf ever made. But that doesn't stop us from trying to collect them all! ----- "Just wanted to drop you a line to let you know who crossed my path this weekend. I was at the Pittsburgh Toy show and I was selling smurf toys at my tables. An older gentleman with his wife came up and was interested in my farmhouse and Gargamel's castle. They were telling me that their son was my age (32) and a big collector of Smurfs and that they were buying them for him. They continued to say that their son lived in Los Angeles, worked for Paramount Pictures and was involved with new Smurf movies. To be honest with you, I didn't really believe them or buy much into it. So they purchased the Smurf toys and he gave me his card and asked me to keep in touch. (He owned an Antique store in Pennsylvania.) They were a really nice couple. Well, to my surprise, when I read your smurf newsletter about the 3 movies I noticed the writer is Herb Ratner. Well, the name on the card is also Herb Ratner! I imagine his son has the same name, how cool is that!! I thought I would share that with you. Maybe I'll be able to get some more info about the movies -Gary Barnette (Columbus, Ohio)" ----- "I have been collecting smurf for longer than I want to say. I love them, they make you happy. When I had my hallway redone I had the carpenter do it all in nice wood with a custom made shelf with glass doors built in. He put beautiful cut glass knobs on it. I collect antique candlesticks and he though I was going to put them in his fine custom shelf. Boy was he surprised when he came back and saw it full of Smurfs! It is a perfect place to put part of my collection. Now when anyone comes down my hallway it's the first thing they see, I love it. -Betty Hartung (Akron, Ohio) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 5) BOMBING SMURFS =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Did you hear about Unicef's campaign to bomb Smurf Village?
